If you are a salon or spa owner and things have felt a little off lately financially… you are not crazy.
A lot of owners are noticing the same thing right now:
• clients stretching appointments longer
• retail sales slowing down
• guests becoming more selective
• clients saying “maybe next time” more often
• fewer impulse add-ons
• people asking more questions about pricing
And honestly? I think some salon owners are panicking a little.
Because when things start slowing down financially, the natural reaction is:
“Maybe I need to lower prices.”
“Maybe I need to run more specials.”
“Maybe I just need more clients.”
But I really want salon owners to understand something:
People still care about beauty.
They still want to feel good.
They still want confidence.
They still want experiences.
But people are spending differently right now.
Clients are becoming more intentional.
And the salons that are staying strong financially are usually not the salons discounting themselves into the ground trying to survive.
They are the salons creating VALUE.
THE BEAUTY INDUSTRY IS SHIFTING
A few years ago people were spending emotionally.
Now a lot of people are spending more carefully.
That means clients are asking themselves:
• Is this worth it?
• Do I trust this business?
• Does this feel different?
• Do I feel taken care of here?
• Does this experience make me want to come back?
And honestly, I think this is where salon owners need to stop thinking only about services and start thinking about the overall business experience.
Because the salons struggling the most right now usually are not struggling because their team is untalented.
They are struggling because the business itself does not feel strong enough.
WHAT SMART SALON OWNERS ARE DOING DIFFERENTLY
The strongest salon owners right now are tightening up their business instead of panicking.
They are focusing heavily on:
• retention
• guest experience
• communication
• memberships
• loyalty systems
• rebooking
• retail education
• consistency
• team standards
• operational structure
And honestly? A lot of salon owners are realizing they can no longer build a business that survives only when the economy feels easy.
That matters.
Because slower economic seasons expose weak systems fast.
If your retention is weak… you feel it.
If your pricing is off… you feel it.
If your payroll is too high… you feel it.
If your client experience is inconsistent… you feel it.
The salons staying healthiest right now are usually the salons already operating with structure.
STOP TRYING TO FIX EVERYTHING WITH DISCOUNTS
This is probably one of the biggest mistakes I am seeing right now.
Salon owners start feeling nervous financially and immediately begin:
• discounting
• lowering pricing
• throwing random specials together
• offering huge promos constantly
• cutting margins thinner and thinner
And honestly? That usually creates MORE stress.
Because now you are:
• working more
• making less
• training clients to wait for deals
• creating inconsistent revenue
• damaging profitability
Instead of constantly discounting, smart salon owners are getting more strategic.
For example:
• simplifying menus
• creating maintenance options
• building membership experiences
• improving rebooking systems
• strengthening retail conversations
• improving follow-up systems
• creating stronger emotional connection with clients
Because clients are still spending.
They are just being more selective.
THE CLIENT EXPERIENCE MATTERS MORE THAN EVER
A lot of salon owners underestimate this part.
Clients remember how businesses make them FEEL.
Do they feel welcomed?
Do they feel important?
Do they feel remembered?
Do they feel emotionally connected to the salon?
Does the business feel organized?
Does the team feel happy to be there?
Those things matter.
A lot.
Especially right now.
And honestly? I think the salons that are going to stay strongest over the next several years are the salons that stop operating emotionally and start operating intentionally.
Because surviving difficult economic seasons is usually not about luck.
It is usually about:
• structure
• leadership
• retention
• systems
• profitability
• consistency
• operational maturity
And that is exactly why we teach those things so heavily inside The Beauty Biz Agency.
Inside The Beauty Biz Agency, we help salon and spa owners create businesses that are structured, profitable, and built to survive every season — not just the easy ones.
If you are ready to stop operating in survival mode and start building a stronger salon business, we would love to help you.

Running a salon or spa is about more than hair, nails, or facials. It’s about people—your team, your clients, and even yourself as a leader. Yet, one of the biggest challenges salon owners face isn’t scheduling, revenue, or marketing—it’s the assumptions we make about the people around us.
When you constantly assume the worst—thinking a stylist is resisting your guidance, a client is being difficult, or your team doesn’t care as much as you do—you’re setting yourself up for stress, frustration, and miscommunication. And over time, this mindset can quietly erode team culture, reduce performance, and even hurt your bottom line.
But there’s a better way: leading with positive intent.
What Does Positive Intent Mean?
Leading with positive intent doesn’t mean ignoring accountability or letting mistakes slide. It means starting from the perspective that most people are acting with good intentions—even if the results or communication fall short.
It’s a shift in mindset: instead of immediately thinking, “They’re ignoring me on purpose,” you ask, “What’s really happening here? How can I guide this situation productively?”
This shift alone can dramatically reduce defensiveness, improve communication, and build trust—turning tension into collaboration.
Why Positive Intent Works
- Reduces Conflict: When you stop assuming the worst, interactions with your team become calmer, more productive, and solution-focused.
- Strengthens Relationships: Team members feel seen, trusted, and respected, which improves engagement and retention.
- Improves Performance: Staff are more willing to follow guidance and take initiative when they don’t feel judged or micromanaged.
- Protects Leadership Confidence: You respond thoughtfully instead of reacting emotionally, which reinforces your credibility as a leader.
How to Lead with Positive Intent in Your Salon
Here are actionable ways to implement this mindset in your daily salon leadership:
1. Pause Before You React
When a stylist misses a step or a client expresses frustration, take a breath. Ask yourself: “What is really happening here? Could there be a misunderstanding?” This short pause prevents knee-jerk reactions and opens the door for constructive conversation.
2. Reframe Your Assumptions
Instead of assuming resistance, consider alternative explanations:
- Lack of clarity in instructions
- External stressors affecting behavior
- A learning opportunity that needs support
3. Focus on Facts and Solutions
Shift the conversation from blame to problem-solving. Discuss what happened, why it matters, and what steps can be taken next. This keeps accountability intact without the emotional tension.
4. Model the Behavior
Your team mirrors your mindset. When you consistently approach situations with positive intent, your staff begin to adopt the same perspective—creating a healthier, more collaborative culture.
5. Reflect on Your Leadership
Regularly evaluate your reactions and assumptions. Journaling or brief reflection at the end of the day can help you identify patterns where negative assumptions are creeping in—and how to correct them moving forward.
The Ripple Effect Beyond the Salon
Leading with positive intent doesn’t just improve salon culture—it transforms how you handle challenges everywhere. You’ll notice changes in:
- Personal relationships
- Communication with clients
- Decision-making under pressure
- Your own stress and mindset
It’s a small shift with big results—for your team, your clients, and your own leadership confidence.

FREE & FIERCE: REDISCOVER YOUR GROOVE
Finding Your Lost Freedom
Remember that rush when you first opened your salon or spa? That “Ahhh yes, this is why I did it!” feeling. Freedom, autonomy, creativity—all rolled into one. No boss, just you calling the shots. Order what you want, take the afternoon off—living the dream, right? But then, success hit...
Success, the Double-Edged Sword
Your salon’s booming, your books are full, but now freedom’s swapped with stress, pressure, and nonstop demand. Where did the dream go? Is it even worth it anymore?
Growth Means Change
As your biz grows, you’ve got to level up too. New roles, new moves, new you. Each stage of growth demands a different version of you. Today, let's break down these roles and how to crush each one.
The Operator
Most salon owners kick off as The Operator. You're hands-on, serving clients, loving the daily hustle. With a small team, you’re tight-knit, sticking together and vibing daily. This is your comfort zone. But as your studio grows, so does your team, and soon enough, you’re diving into the next role...
The Manager
Welcome to The Manager phase. Now you’ve got 4-8 people, and it’s time to juggle team management along with client care. Managing humans is a whole new ball game, and it’s tough. You might not connect with everyone like before, and team dynamics can get tricky. You’re wearing all the hats: operations, client care, accounts, marketing, hiring, firing—you name it. And guess what? You might start earning less than before. It’s a grind, but there’s a way out...
Make the Move!
Don’t sweat it, The Manager phase isn’t forever. Sometimes, all it takes is one or two strategic moves. Maybe it’s hiring another team member or creating a management structure. Know what your ‘thing’ is? What’s stopping you? Fear. It’s the biggest blocker. Whether it’s fear of losing clients or stepping back, it’s holding you back.
Check out my podcast on overcoming fear, and start making that big move. Write it down:
- What’s the big move you need to make?
- What’s the fear stopping you?
Writing it down works like magic. Be brave, make the move, and step into your next role...
The CEO
Once you’re past The Manager phase, welcome back to freedom! As The CEO, with 8-9+ people in your biz, what worked before now needs tweaking. You can’t manage everyone solo. It’s time to lead and train a manager. If stress and frustration creep in, you haven’t fully embraced your CEO role.
Step away from daily ops, think long-term. Create space to strategize. It feels weird not being “in demand,” but that’s the goal—to focus on what’s next and drive the biz forward. Feel the passion and drive kick in. Your team benefits from this new momentum. This is the ultimate goal, right?
Keep Growing
No matter which stage you’re at, there’s always room for growth. Feeling stuck? Just a little self-awareness, grit, and determination can get you where you want to be. You got this!

Ever had one of those days where you’re searching everywhere for your mojo?
Checked under the couch? Scoured the junk drawer? Even peeked in the fridge? Yep—it's totally MIA.
Same here.
Some days, it feels like your internal battery is stuck at 1%, and everything’s lagging. You’re refreshing emails, doom-scrolling Facebook, and somehow checking the same app on both your phone and laptop like it’s going to change (Karen had a great bike ride—again).
Today’s one of those days for me. And honestly? The best way I know to shake off the funk is to talk about it—and help you shake it off, too.
Lately, I’ve noticed a lot of salon and spa owners feeling the same way. Is it the moon? The weather? Mercury doing gymnastics in retrograde? Who knows. All I know is I just buried the wrapper of a king-sized vegan chocolate bar under the trash like it was a crime scene. Time to snap out of it.
Here’s what’s helping me get my groove back (and might help you too):
1. Give Yourself a Break
First off, stop stressing about off days. We all have them. Some days you’re a productivity
powerhouse, and others, not so much. It’s your body’s way of saying, “Hey, take a break.”
2. Listen to Your Body
Sometimes you just need to chill. If you’re exhausted and can sneak in a nap without your kids
turning the house into a circus, do it. Or take a luxurious bubble bath. Your body will thank you.
3. Get Moving
Shake off the stale vibes by getting active! Whether it’s star jumps, a walk, or a full-on workout,
just move. It’s a great way to reset.
4. Blast Some Tunes
Remember that song you used to play only on weekends because it made you want to dance?
Play it now. Find a song that makes you happy and gets you moving. Instant mood booster.
5. Do Something Fun
Work doesn’t have to be all-consuming. If you’re feeling flat, spice things up with some fun!
Watch a funny movie, chat with your favorite person, or play with your dog.
6. Dream a Little
When I hit a mental wall, I look up vacations. It reignites my fire and motivates me to work out
and hustle hard. Dream about what excites you—be it vacations, dream homes, cars, or
designer shoes. Visualize your dreams coming true.
7. Check Off One Task
Even on a “meh” day, getting just one thing done can make you feel accomplished. Pick the
easiest task on your list and power through it. Then reward yourself with a treat (unless you
already snuck one, like me).
At the end of the day, don’t beat yourself up. Everyone has “meh” days. But with a little self-care and a few mindset shifts, you can reset and rise up.
Tomorrow’s a fresh start. Let’s get it.
